Sclerotherapy is one of the oldest and best known varicose vein treatments used today. Considered the “gold standard” in treating spider veins, sclerotherapy is minimally invasive and highly effective in eliminating veins visible on the surface of the skin. This procedure involves injections of a sclerosing agent directly into the affected vein, which causes the vein walls to seal together and the vein to fade from view.
How does Sclerotherapy Work?
Dr. Lawrence performs sclerotherapy as an outpatient procedure at PCI Vein Center. The procedure does not require any type of anesthesia and most patients experience only minor discomfort during the injections. A fine needle is used to inject the solution directly into the affected vein. The solution causes vein walls to swell and seal together, stopping blood flow and rerouting it to healthy veins nearby.
The procedure normally takes less than 15 minutes to complete, depending on the number of veins to be addressed in a single session. Some veins may require more than one injection, which is typically spaced a number of weeks apart to ensure the best possible results.
What to Expect after Treatment
Patients are able to return to regular activities immediately following treatment, although aerobic activity may need to wait a number of days. Patients may experience redness or bruising at the injection sites, which will subside within a few days. Some skin discoloration may also appear at the injection site, which usually goes away after a number of months.
We recommend patients may wear compression stockings for 2-3 weeks after the procedure to promote healthy blood flow and healing of the area. Full results from sclerotherapy can be seen within 2-4 weeks after treatment. Some patients will require subsequent treatment sessions to achieve desired results.
Sclerotherapy is considered a safe and effective treatment for spider and smaller varicose veins. For more information about this procedure, or additional options in vein treatment, contact our staff at the PCI Vein Center today.
