Facial Veins: Why They Happen, What You Can Do
Facial veins often appear as networks of veins that resemble a spider’s web. Often referred to as spider veins or thread veins, these networks can be a significant cosmetic concern for some patients. There are a number of reasons why facial veins might occur, including injury and some types of skin conditions. The good news is there are also a variety of treatment options available to minimize the appearance of these veins for a clearer complexion.
Causes of Facial Veins
There are a number of reasons why facial veins might appear, including:
- Sun exposure
- Hormonal fluctuations
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Cigarette use
- Steroid use
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Skin conditions like rosacea
Because potential causes of facial veins are so diverse, it is impossible to prevent this condition completely. For some, the network may be relatively small and easy to hide under makeup, while others might see a significant portion of their face affected. If you are bothered by facial veins, Dr. Lawrence at PCI Vein Center has a number of treatment options to consider.
Facial Vein Treatment
There are a number of treatment choices for facial veins. Most take just a few minutes to complete and involve no discomfort or downtime afterward. Popular options include:
Laser Therapy – Laser energy is used to damage vessel walls below the surface of the skin, causing the vein to seal shut and eventually fade from view. The laser targets the affected vein only, leaving surrounding skin, tissue and vessels intact.
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy – Also known as IPL, this procedure works on a similar theory as laser treatment. However, instead of laser light, intense pulses of blue light are used to damage vessel walls and seal damaged vessels away.
Sclerotherapy – Although this injectable treatment is not commonly recommended for facial veins, there may be instances where sclerotherapy is the best treatment solution. This procedure injects small amounts of a sclerosing agent into the affected vein, sealing walls of the vein shut so the vein is eventually reabsorbed by the body.
After facial vein treatment, patients can usually return to work and regular activities right away. It is very important to use ample sun protection after one of these procedures, since treatment leaves skin more vulnerable to the sun’s damaging rays. Some patients may also require a series of treatment sessions, spaced a few weeks apart, to achieve desired results.
